Understand what the category names mean
Cementitious systems contain a cement-based component; liquid-applied membranes form their layer through application and curing. These descriptions do not define every product’s flexibility, exposure limits or compatibility. Some cementitious systems are modified with polymers. The actual technical document is more useful than a broad category label.
Compare the substrate and movement requirements
Establish the condition of concrete or another proposed base, any retained coatings and the details expected to move. Joints may require a separate designed treatment. Do not assume that a flexible coating replaces a movement joint or that a cementitious coating suits any cracked structure. Where structural movement is suspected, obtain the appropriate assessment.
Check immersion and finishing conditions
A bathroom beneath tiles, an exposed roof and a continuously immersed pool impose different requirements. Confirm whether the exact product is suitable for the application and compatible with adhesives, screeds or protective finishes. Drinking-water use needs its own product-specific suitability check. A brand name alone does not answer these questions.
Compare complete systems rather than one layer
Request the preparation, primer, reinforcement, membrane, details, curing and protection requirements for each proposal. Price the same scope before comparing materials.
